The goal of this project is to supply database access to spatial information on lichens and lichenicolous fungi of all 193 countries of the world and of additional 300 geographical units at the subnational level, e.g., islands and states of larger countries, based on published records. The database and its contents are currently under development.

The geographic division follows in part the World Geographical Scheme for Recording Plant Distributions as proposed by TDWG and the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names.

The databased checklist information is based on literature data and is actually restricted to Europe, parts of Asia, continental African countries, South East Asia, Australia, North America, and Antarctica.

Database, WWW interfaces and a parser for the checklist database import were developed in the frame of the BIOTA Southern Africa Project (S04), being supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Reserach (BMBF). A major part of the data have been gathered within a joint project of University Hamburg, Herbarium Hamburgense and University of Bayreuth, Department of Mycology, being supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).
